What makes a pattern beginner-friendly
Every design here is marked Beginner and uses six thread colours or fewer, so there are few colour changes and a short shopping list. They use whole cross stitches only, which means no quarter or three-quarter stitches to learn, and they are small enough to finish in a few evenings.
What you need
A piece of 14-count Aida, a size 24 tapestry needle, an embroidery hoop and the threads listed on the pattern page. Use two strands of thread on 14-count. Our guide to starting cross stitch walks through the first stitch, and how to read a cross stitch chart explains the symbols.
When you are ready for more
Move on to patterns marked Easy, which add more colours and larger areas, then try backstitch outlines. Any design in the library can also be printed with large symbols, and the cross stitch pattern maker turns your own photo into a chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest cross stitch pattern for a beginner?
A small design with few colours and large blocks of each, such as a heart, a simple flower or a geometric motif. Every pattern in this collection meets that rule.
What fabric should a beginner use?
14-count Aida in white or cream. The holes are easy to see and each stitch is about 1.8 mm, so the design is not too small.
How long does a beginner pattern take?
Most designs here are small enough to finish in one to three evenings, depending on size and how fast you stitch.
Do I need to know backstitch?
No. These patterns use whole cross stitches only.
