About this design
The elephant faces right, with a Steel Gray Light (318) body and Steel Gray Dark (414) outline and ear line. The ear has a Dusty Rose (3716) inside, there is one black eye, and the trunk hangs down on the right. White toenails on each foot are a small, sweet detail. It is mostly one colour, so it is restful to stitch.
Stitch counts: 213 in 318 (Steel Gray Lt), 88 in 414 (Steel Gray Dk), 15 in 3716 (Dusty Rose Med Vy Lt), 9 in BLANC (White) and 1 in 310 (Black), 326 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Find the centre of your fabric and of the chart, and begin there so the design sits in the middle. Stitch the dark outline in sections and fill each section as you go, so you never count across a big empty space. Two strands on 14-count is the usual choice.
Finishing ideas
At 24 × 18 stitches the design is about 1.7 × 1.3 inches on 14-count Aida and 1.3 × 1.0 inches on 18-count. A 4-inch hoop leaves room to frame it, and it also makes a baby card or a birth sampler motif.
Colour plan
DMC 318 Steel Gray Lt does the most work, 65% of the 326 stitches, followed by DMC 414 Steel Gray Dk at 27%. DMC BLANC White (9) and DMC 310 Black (1) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 25% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
9 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 15 times.
Anchor equivalents
