About this design
The block is four squares, each split on the diagonal into a coloured triangle and a Blanc one, turned so the colours spin round the centre. The colours are Red (321), Baby Blue Medium (334), Yellow (743) and Chartreuse (703), framed by a border of Pewter Gray Very Dark (3799). Stitched blocks can be joined into a sampler, just as a quilter joins fabric blocks.
Stitch counts: 264 in BLANC (White), 92 in 3799 (Pewter Gray Vy Dk), 55 in 321 (Red), 55 in 334 (Baby Blue Medium), 55 in 743 (Yellow Med) and 55 in 703 (Chartreuse), 576 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Use two strands on 14-count Aida and start from the middle: fold the fabric in four to find the centre and match it to the centre of the chart. Stitch the border first, then each triangle; the diagonal edges step one stitch per row.
Finishing ideas
Finished, it measures roughly 1.7 × 1.7 inches on 14-count (1.3 × 1.3 inches on 18-count), so a 4-inch hoop suits it. It is also the right size for a coaster, a pin cushion or one block of a sampler.
Colour plan
DMC BLANC White does the most work, 46% of the 576 stitches, followed by DMC 3799 Pewter Gray Vy Dk at 16%. Every colour is used at least 55 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 5 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
