About this design
The stocking is drawn the way children draw one: a straight leg, a rounded foot pointing right and a deep white cuff at the top, with a black outline that keeps the shape crisp on any fabric. White single-stitch dots across the red read as snow or a simple knitted pattern, and a darker red along the heel and sole gives the foot a little depth.
How to use it
Stitch it on 14-count Aida for a tree ornament: back it with felt, trim close to the outline and add a ribbon loop at the cuff. It also fits on a folded card or a gift tag. Swap the dots for a name in the editor’s text stamp to personalise a stocking for each member of the family.
Size and threads
The chart is 16 stitches wide and 20 tall, with 239 full cross stitches in 5 colours: DMC 321 Red (126), DMC 310 Black (60), DMC B5200 Snow White (24), DMC 498 Red Dark (16), DMC 762 Pearl Gray Vy Lt (13). On 14-count Aida the design measures about 2.9 × 3.6 cm (1.1 × 1.4 in); on 18-count it shrinks to 2.3 × 2.8 cm. Cut the fabric at least 5 cm larger than the design on every side so it fits a hoop, and use two strands on 14-count. Each colour needs well under one skein.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 53% of the 239 stitches, followed by DMC 310 Black at 25%. Every colour is used at least 13 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 25% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
17 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 10 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
