About this design
The cone is an elongated oval that narrows at the top, filled with a staggered pattern of DMC 433 Brown Medium, 434 Brown Light and 801 Coffee Brown Dark that suggests overlapping scales. A short 3371 Black Brown stalk sits at the top. The texture does all the work here, so it looks detailed even though there are no outlines or backstitch.
How to work it
Work row by row, following the scale pattern on the chart; once you see the repeat it becomes quick. Stitch the stalk last. Because the three browns are close in tone, sort them into separate labelled bobbins before you start so you never pick up the wrong one.
Finishing ideas
At 22 × 25 stitches the design is about 1.6 × 1.8 inches (4.0 × 4.5 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.2 × 1.4 inches on 18-count. Pine cones suit autumn wreaths, winter cards and Christmas ornaments; add a red ribbon bow in backstitch for the holidays.
Colour plan
DMC 434 Brown Light does the most work, 44% of the 190 stitches, followed by DMC 433 Brown Med at 32%. DMC 3371 Black Brown (6) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 65% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
62 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 15 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
