Pixel lettering is everywhere in game-inspired design, from title screens to badges and stream overlays. This tool sets your words in hand-drawn pixel fonts on an exact grid, with borders and free colour, and exports a crisp transparent PNG.

How it works

  1. Type your text. Up to 40 characters across one or more lines.
  2. Pick a font and layout. Basic 5×7, Serif 7×9, Tiny 3×5, Bold 6×7, Outline 7×9 or Big 10×14; horizontal, stacked or sideways.
  3. Choose colours and a border. Text, background (or none) and border colours, and one of eight border styles.
  4. Download. Pixel PNG at 1×, 8× or 16×, or open the lettering in the pixel editor.

Tips for pixel lettering

Leave the background empty for overlays. With no background colour, the PNG is transparent around the letters, so you can place them over screenshots, art or video.

Add a dark outline for readability. Light letters over busy images need an edge. The single border frames the whole line; for an outline around each letter, open it in the editor and draw a one-pixel ring.

Scale with whole numbers. Pixel art should be enlarged by 2×, 3×, 4× and so on, never by odd factors, or pixels end up different sizes. Download the 8× or 16× PNG rather than resizing elsewhere.

Mind the spacing. One pixel between letters is the classic look; two pixels read better on a busy background. Line spacing matters for two-line titles.

Use Tiny for HUD-style labels. The 3×5 font is ideal for small labels such as scores and lives where space is tight.

Frequently asked questions

Which pixel fonts are there?

Basic 5×7, a clear general-purpose font; Serif 7×9, with small serifs for titles; Tiny 3×5 for compact labels; Bold 6×7 for heavier strokes; Outline 7×9 for hollow letters; and Big 10×14 for large headings. All six were drawn in-house for CraftPatterns.

Can I use the lettering in my game or video?

Yes. Lettering you make with the tool is yours to use, including commercially.

How do I export it without blur?

Download the Pixel PNG at 8× or 16×. Each pixel becomes a sharp square block, and empty areas are transparent.

Can I choose any colour?

Yes. Text, background and border colours come from a 4,096-colour palette, and the colour well finds the nearest to any colour you pick.

Does it support lowercase?

The fonts are capitals, numbers and a few symbols, which read most clearly at small pixel sizes.

Can I make vertical text?

Yes. Stacked places letters one above another; Sideways rotates the whole line by 90 degrees.
