About this design
The flesh is Melon Dark (3705) with seven Black (310) seeds, and the curved rind is three bands: Yellow Ultra Pale (3823), Chartreuse Bright (704) and Green (699). The bands follow the curve, so the slice looks round even though every stitch is square. It is wide and low, so it fits a card or a bookmark well.
Stitch counts: 105 in 3705 (Melon Dark), 33 in 699 (Green), 31 in 704 (Chartreuse Bright), 27 in 3823 (Yellow Ultra Pale) and 7 in 310 (Black), 203 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Stitch the outer green band first; the inner bands then follow it row by row. Keep all your top stitches crossing in the same direction; it is the one habit that makes a finished piece look tidy. Two strands on 14-count Aida work well.
Finishing ideas
Finished, it measures roughly 1.6 × 0.8 inches on 14-count (1.3 × 0.6 inches on 18-count), so a 4-inch hoop suits it. It is also the right size for a summer card, a bookmark or a picnic napkin corner.
Colour plan
DMC 3705 Melon Dark does the most work, 52% of the 203 stitches, followed by DMC 699 Green at 16%. DMC 310 Black (7) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 20% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
15 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
