About this design
The heart is Red (321) with a Garnet (815) outline and a Blanc shine on the upper left. An arrow passes through it from left to right: Baby Blue (3755) fletching, a Brown Light (434) shaft and a Steel Gray (414) arrowhead. It is wide and low, so it fits a card, a bookmark or a wedding keepsake.
Stitch counts: 109 in 321 (Red), 35 in 815 (Garnet Medium), 12 in 3755 (Baby Blue), 9 in 434 (Brown Light), 7 in 414 (Steel Gray Dk) and 3 in BLANC (White), 175 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Find the centre of your fabric and of the chart, and begin there so the design sits in the middle. Stitch the heart outline first, then the arrow shaft, so the two parts line up where the arrow crosses. Two strands on 14-count is the usual choice.
Finishing ideas
On 14-count Aida the 33 × 15 stitch design comes out at about 2.4 × 1.1 inches, and on 18-count about 1.8 × 0.8 inches. Mount it in a 4-inch hoop, or use it for a Valentine’s card, a wedding keepsake or a bookmark.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 62% of the 175 stitches, followed by DMC 815 Garnet Medium at 20%. DMC 434 Brown Light (9), DMC 414 Steel Gray Dk (7) and DMC BLANC White (3) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 65% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
35 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
Anchor equivalents
