About this design
The leaf is Burnt Orange (946) with paler Pumpkin (971) between the veins, and the veins themselves are Red-Copper (919), running from the stem out to each point. A short Coffee Brown (898) stem finishes it. Four colours and a symmetrical shape make it an easy autumn project, and several in different oranges and reds make a lovely set.
Stitch counts: 86 in 946 (Burnt Orange Med), 28 in 919 (Red-Copper), 26 in 971 (Pumpkin) and 3 in 898 (Coffee Brown Vy Dk), 143 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Use two strands on 14-count Aida and start from the middle: fold the fabric in four to find the centre and match it to the centre of the chart. Stitch the central vein first, from the stem to the top point; the rest of the leaf is a mirror image either side of it.
Finishing ideas
Finished, it measures roughly 1.2 × 1.4 inches on 14-count (0.9 × 1.1 inches on 18-count), so a 4-inch hoop suits it. It is also the right size for an autumn card or a coaster.
Colour plan
DMC 946 Burnt Orange Med does the most work, 60% of the 143 stitches, followed by DMC 919 Red-Copper at 20%. DMC 898 Coffee Brown Vy Dk (3) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 56% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
15 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
