About this design
The bat is Black (310) with wing panels in Pewter Gray Very Dark (3799), which shows the shape of the wing bones. Two Lemon (307) eyes make it look straight at you, and its ears stand up in points. Stitch it on orange or purple fabric for a stronger Halloween look.
Stitch counts: 166 in 310 (Black), 50 in 3799 (Pewter Gray Vy Dk) and 2 in 307 (Lemon), 218 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
On white fabric, black is easy to see; on dark fabric, use a light under the hoop so you can count the holes. Two strands of floss on 14-count Aida give good coverage, and working each colour in rows of half stitches, then coming back to cross them, keeps the stitches neat and even.
Finishing ideas
At 23 × 15 stitches the design is about 1.6 × 1.1 inches on 14-count Aida and 1.3 × 0.8 inches on 18-count. A 4-inch hoop leaves room to frame it, and it also makes a Halloween card, a treat-bag patch or a garland of several.
Colour plan
DMC 310 Black does the most work, 76% of the 218 stitches, followed by DMC 3799 Pewter Gray Vy Dk at 23%. DMC 307 Lemon (2) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 37% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
12 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
