About this design
The flower is a round block of Red (321) with short lines of Garnet (815) that suggest the crinkled petals. The centre is Black (310) with a little Pewter Gray (413) to give it depth, and the stem below is Hunter Green Dark (3345) with two leaves in Hunter Green (3346). It is a simple, bold design that reads well from across a room.
Stitch counts: 139 in 321 (Red), 26 in 3346 (Hunter Green), 20 in 815 (Garnet Medium), 16 in 310 (Black), 9 in 3345 (Hunter Green Dk) and 5 in 413 (Pewter Gray Dark), 215 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Work the black centre first, then fill the red outwards from it, adding the 815 lines as you reach them. Two strands of floss on 14-count Aida give good coverage, and working each colour in rows of half stitches, then coming back to cross them, keeps the stitches neat and even.
Finishing ideas
Finished, it measures roughly 1.2 × 1.5 inches on 14-count (0.9 × 1.2 inches on 18-count), so a 4-inch hoop suits it. It is also the right size for a Remembrance card or a lapel-sized ornament.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 65% of the 215 stitches, followed by DMC 3346 Hunter Green at 12%. DMC 3345 Hunter Green Dk (9) and DMC 413 Pewter Gray Dark (5) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 40% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 8 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
