About this design
The hedgehog’s spines are a mound of DMC 3790 Beige Gray Ultra Dark with diagonal flecks of 3021 Brown Gray Very Dark, which give them a prickly texture without any backstitch. A few spines stick up along the top edge. The face is a pointed snout of 3864 Mocha Beige Light, with a 3371 Black Brown eye and nose, and a strip of beige underneath for the belly with three little dark feet below. It is small, quick and very forgiving.
How to work it
Stitch the spines first, placing the darker flecks as you go across each row, then the beige face and belly. Add the eye and nose last so they sit cleanly on top. For extra texture, work a few straight stitches in 3021 across the spines after the cross stitch is finished.
Finishing ideas
At 26 × 14 stitches the design is about 1.9 × 1.0 inches (4.7 × 2.5 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.4 × 0.8 inches on 18-count. Add it to an autumn card, a pencil case or a bookmark, or stitch a family of three in a row.
Colour plan
DMC 3790 Beige Gray Ult Dk does the most work, 53% of the 244 stitches, followed by DMC 3864 Mocha Beige Light at 26%. Every colour is used at least 10 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 33% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
28 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 15 times.
