About this design
This is a simple, striking silhouette: a black cat in DMC 310, seen from behind, sitting upright with its pointed ears raised and its tail curling out to the right. Behind it is a large round full moon in 3078 Golden Yellow Very Light, and the cat sits on a 3371 Black Brown branch that runs across the bottom. Silhouettes rely on shape rather than detail, which makes this a fast and satisfying stitch.
How to work it
Stitch the moon first, leaving the cat’s shape unstitched, then fill the cat in black so its edges sit cleanly against the yellow. Add the branch last. On dark fabric, the moon glows even more.
Finishing ideas
At 30 × 27 stitches the design is about 2.1 × 1.9 inches (5.4 × 4.9 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.7 × 1.5 inches on 18-count. A great Halloween hoop, a gift for a cat lover or a card for a night owl.
Colour plan
DMC 3078 Golden Yellow Vy Lt does the most work, 68% of the 488 stitches, followed by DMC 310 Black at 21%. Every colour is used at least 53 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 40% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
1 square stands alone in its colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 8 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
