Latch hook rugs suit bold, graphic designs: stripes, checks, diamonds, rainbows, simple animals. The editor gives you a grid matched to rug canvas so you can design one knot at a time, see the pile in the realistic view, and get yarn counts as you go.

How it works

  1. Start a grid or open a file. Set the width and height in knots, or open a .cpat, OXS or CraftPatterns PDF.
  2. Add yarn colours. Pick from our named generic shades or find the nearest to any colour.
  3. Draw. Pencil, eraser, fill, picker, lines, rectangles and mirroring, with unlimited undo.
  4. Export. PDF with knot counts and packs, PNG, SVG, CSV shopping list or .cpat.

Tips for designing latch hook rugs

Work at real size. Choose 3.75 or 5-hole canvas in the advanced options first; the size line then shows the finished rug in inches and centimetres. A doormat is often around 80 × 50 knots on 3.75-hole canvas.

Use blocks, not lines. Thin lines vanish in the pile. Build designs from areas at least two knots wide; outlines that matter should be two knots thick.

Mirror for balance. Rugs are seen from every side. Symmetrical designs drawn with both mirrors on look calm and intentional, and you only draw a quarter.

Keep colour counts sensible. Each colour is a separate yarn order. Watch the counts in the key and merge shades that would look alike in the pile.

Plan for binding. Leave the outermost rows of canvas empty in the design, or add a solid border two or three knots wide that will sit next to the binding.

Check the pile preview. The realistic view shows fluffy tufts spilling over their neighbours. If a detail disappears there, thicken it.

When the chart is ready

Print the PDF, mark every tenth hole on the canvas, and hook from the bottom row up. The stitch tracker remembers where you stopped between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How big can my rug design be?

Up to 2,000 × 2,000 knots. At 3.75 holes per inch that is far larger than any rug canvas, so you will not run out of room.

Can I design a round or shaped rug?

Yes. Draw the shape and leave the outside empty with the eraser. Empty squares are not counted, and the chart shows exactly which holes to fill.

How do I make a geometric rug quickly?

Use rectangles and filled rectangles for blocks of colour, lines for stripes, and mirroring to repeat a quarter of the design across the whole rug.

Is my design saved automatically?

Yes, in your browser. Download a .cpat backup from time to time; the editor reminds you after ten minutes.

Can I open a latch hook kit chart?

You can open .cpat, OXS and CraftPatterns PDF files. To copy a design from a printed kit chart, trace it on a blank grid of the same size.

Which shortcuts can I use?

B pencil, E eraser, G fill, I picker, L line, R rectangle, H and V mirroring, 1 to 9 for colours, X for the next colour and Ctrl or Cmd with Z to undo.
