About this design
The mug is Red (321) with a Garnet (815) rim, base and handle, and a Blanc heart on the front. A line of Coffee Brown (801) shows inside the rim, and two curls of Pearl Gray (415) steam rise above. It is square, quick and a natural gift for a coffee lover.
Stitch counts: 86 in 321 (Red), 31 in 815 (Garnet Medium), 27 in BLANC (White), 10 in 801 (Coffee Brown Dk) and 8 in 415 (Pearl Gray), 162 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Count the heart carefully, as it is the only shape inside the red; fill the red around it afterwards. Two strands of floss on 14-count Aida give good coverage, and working each colour in rows of half stitches, then coming back to cross them, keeps the stitches neat and even.
Finishing ideas
At 17 × 17 stitches the design is about 1.2 × 1.2 inches on 14-count Aida and 0.9 × 0.9 inches on 18-count. A 4-inch hoop leaves room to frame it, and it also makes a coaster or a card.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 53% of the 162 stitches, followed by DMC 815 Garnet Medium at 19%. DMC 415 Pearl Gray (8) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 44% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
8 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 7 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
