About this design

The letters are simple block capitals in DMC 321 Red, one stitch thick so they are easy to read. Above them sits a heart split down the middle: the left half in 3708 Melon Light and the right half in red, a small detail that makes it look playful. A dotted line of melon underlines the word. It is quick, sweet and suits almost any occasion.

How to work it

Centre the word using the chart’s centre arrows and stitch the letters first, then the heart and the dotted line. To personalise it, swap the word in the editor’s text tool, for example a name or a date.

Finishing ideas

At 31 × 21 stitches the design is about 2.2 × 1.5 inches (5.6 × 3.8 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.7 × 1.2 inches on 18-count. Use it for a Valentine card, a wedding gift, a pillow or a framed piece for a bedroom.

Colour plan

DMC 321 Red does the most work, 71% of the 120 stitches, followed by DMC 3708 Melon Light at 29%. Every colour is used at least 35 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 82% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

18 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 30 times.
