Monograms and names are the most-stitched needlepoint designs of all, from preppy key fobs to Christmas stocking cuffs. Charting letters by hand on graph paper is slow and spacing is easy to get wrong, so this tool sets the lettering on an exact stitch grid with the border meeting cleanly at the corners.

How it works

  1. Type your text. Initials, a name, a date or a short phrase, on one line or several.
  2. Choose font and layout. Basic 5×7, Serif 7×9, Tiny 3×5, Bold 6×7, Outline 7×9 or Big 10×14; horizontal, stacked letter above letter, or sideways for a belt that reads along its length.
  3. Pick colours and a border. Text, background and border colours from DMC®, Anchor or wool shades, and one of eight border styles.
  4. Download. A PDF chart with thread amounts for each colour, ready for your canvas.

Tips for needlepoint lettering

Pick the mesh before the font. On 18-mesh a Basic letter is just under 1 cm tall, which is perfect for a keyfob but small on a cushion. On 13-mesh the same letter is about 1.4 cm, and Serif letters are larger again. Set the mesh in the advanced options and watch the finished size under the controls.

Contrast beats colour. Needlepoint backgrounds are solid, so the lettering must stand out against them. Navy on cream, red on white and white on green all read well at a distance; two mid-tones rarely do. Check the Colour view at small size on screen.

Leave space around the text. A row or two of background between the letters and the border keeps the design from feeling cramped and gives you room to finish the edges. Use the padding control rather than adding blank rows by hand.

Stitch letters first. Work the lettering in continental tent stitch, then fill the background in basketweave. Basketweave keeps the canvas from skewing, and filling around finished letters keeps their edges crisp.

Keep stitch direction consistent. Every tent stitch should slant the same way. On single-stitch-wide strokes, a stitch slanting the other way is very noticeable.

Use the Sideways layout for long strips. Belts, dog collars and guitar straps are worked across the narrow width. Sideways rotates the text so it reads along the strip when it is worn.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the text be?

Up to 40 characters on as many lines as you need, which covers a full name and a date or a short saying over two or three lines.

How do I make a name belt?

Choose a single line of text and set a fixed width only if you need the lettering centred on a set stitch count. Belts are often stitched on 18-mesh about 1.25 inches (22 stitches) tall; use padding to add background above and below the letters until the height matches.

Which font suits a monogram?

Serif 7×9 has small feet and looks traditional for initials. Basic 5×7 is clearer for children's names, and Tiny 3×5 fits a date under a larger design.

Can I add a border?

Yes: single, double, dotted, checker, zigzag, hearts, stars or diamonds, in any colour from the palette. Borders frame a keyfob or coaster neatly and hide small differences in tension around the edge.

Can I send the exact design to someone?

Yes. The share link rebuilds the same text, font, layout, border and colours on any device.

How do I add a small motif next to the name?

Press Edit and draw it beside the lettering with the pencil, or open the chart in the needlepoint editor, where mirroring helps with symmetrical motifs.
