About this design

The chick is a round DMC 307 Lemon body outlined in 3045 Yellow Beige Dark, with a little tuft of feathers sticking up on top. A dark eye, a 740 Tangerine beak and a 3708 Melon Light cheek make up its face, and a 444 Lemon Dark wing on the left side gives it a little depth. Two small orange feet stand underneath. It is a quick, happy design for Easter and spring.

How to work it

Stitch the outline first, then fill the yellow, leaving space for the eye and wing. Add the darker wing, the cheek, the beak and the feet last. A single French knot in black makes a lovely eye.

Finishing ideas

At 17 × 17 stitches the design is about 1.2 × 1.2 inches (3.1 × 3.1 cm) on 14-count Aida and 0.9 × 0.9 inches on 18-count. Stitch a little flock for an Easter card, a basket liner or a spring garland.

Colour plan

DMC 307 Lemon does the most work, 62% of the 185 stitches, followed by DMC 3045 Yellow Beige Dk at 24%. DMC 3708 Melon Light (1) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 36% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

11 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 8 times.
