About this design
The starfish is Orange Spice (721) with a Copper (920) edge, and a scattering of Pumpkin Pale (3825) stitches gives the bumpy texture a real one has. Only three colours are used, so there is very little thread changing. Pair it with the seashell and the goldfish for a seaside set.
Stitch counts: 92 in 721 (Orange Spice Med), 52 in 920 (Copper Med) and 10 in 3825 (Pumpkin Pale), 154 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Find the centre of your fabric and of the chart, and begin there so the design sits in the middle. Stitch the copper edge first; it outlines each arm and makes the fill easy. Two strands on 14-count is the usual choice.
Finishing ideas
On 14-count Aida the 18 × 17 stitch design comes out at about 1.3 × 1.2 inches, and on 18-count about 1.0 × 0.9 inches. Mount it in a 4-inch hoop, or use it for a card or a coaster.
Colour plan
DMC 721 Orange Spice Med does the most work, 60% of the 154 stitches, followed by DMC 920 Copper Med at 34%. Every colour is used at least 10 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 50% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
18 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 8 times.
