About this design

Eight points radiate from a round Topaz (725) centre. Each point is split down its length into Baby Blue Medium (334) and Baby Blue Very Dark (312), so the star looks faceted, like a compass rose. Only three colours are used, and the design repeats eight times around the centre, so you learn it quickly.

Stitch counts: 104 in 334 (Baby Blue Medium), 56 in 312 (Baby Blue Very Dark) and 37 in 725 (Topaz Med Lt), 197 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.

How to work it

Stitch the centre first, then work one point at a time, going round the star. Keep all your top stitches crossing in the same direction; it is the one habit that makes a finished piece look tidy. Two strands on 14-count Aida work well.

Finishing ideas

At 21 × 21 stitches the design is about 1.5 × 1.5 inches on 14-count Aida and 1.2 × 1.2 inches on 18-count. A 4-inch hoop leaves room to frame it, and it also makes a coaster or an ornament.

Colour plan

DMC 334 Baby Blue Medium does the most work, 53% of the 197 stitches, followed by DMC 312 Baby Blue Very Dark at 28%. Every colour is used at least 37 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 55% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 9 times.
