About this design
The fleece is Blanc inside a bumpy Pearl Gray (415) outline, which reads as wool. The face on the right is Black (310) with a Blanc eye and a pink nose, and the four legs have Pewter Gray (413) hooves. It makes a sweet spring or Easter card, and two or three in a row make a nice border.
Stitch counts: 141 in BLANC (White), 42 in 310 (Black), 41 in 415 (Pearl Gray), 8 in 413 (Pewter Gray Dark) and 1 in 3716 (Dusty Rose Med Vy Lt), 233 full cross stitches in all. One skein of each colour is plenty.
How to work it
Stitch the grey outline first, then fill the Blanc; it is much easier to see where the white goes. Keep all your top stitches crossing in the same direction; it is the one habit that makes a finished piece look tidy. Two strands on 14-count Aida work well.
Finishing ideas
Finished, it measures roughly 1.6 × 1.1 inches on 14-count (1.2 × 0.8 inches on 18-count), so a 4-inch hoop suits it. It is also the right size for an Easter card or a border motif.
Colour plan
DMC BLANC White does the most work, 61% of the 233 stitches, followed by DMC 310 Black at 18%. DMC 413 Pewter Gray Dark (8) and DMC 3716 Dusty Rose Med Vy Lt (1) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 29% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
7 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 8 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
