About this design
The mitten points upwards with its thumb on the right, and the white pattern on the red is three small crosses, the motif you see on Nordic knitted mittens. The cuff is white with a grey ribbing line, and darker red at the base of the hand adds a little depth.
How to use it
Stitch a pair facing each other (flip one in the editor) and join them with a ribbon for a sweet ornament. It suits winter cards that are not Christmas-specific and gift tags for knitted presents. Change the red to blue or green to make a set.
Size and threads
The chart is 15 stitches wide and 18 tall, with 209 full cross stitches in 5 colours: DMC 321 Red (102), DMC 310 Black (57), DMC B5200 Snow White (43), DMC 762 Pearl Gray Vy Lt (5), DMC 498 Red Dark (2). On 14-count Aida the design measures about 2.7 × 3.3 cm (1.1 × 1.3 in); on 18-count it shrinks to 2.1 × 2.5 cm. Cut the fabric at least 5 cm larger than the design on every side so it fits a hoop, and use two strands on 14-count. Each colour needs well under one skein.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 49% of the 209 stitches, followed by DMC 310 Black at 27%. DMC 762 Pearl Gray Vy Lt (5) and DMC 498 Red Dark (2) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 23% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
13 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 14 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
