About this design
The anchor is drawn in DMC 336 Navy Blue with a two-stitch-wide shank, a straight stock across the top and two curved arms that sweep up into pointed flukes at the bottom. A ring of 321 Red sits at the very top. Navy and red is the classic nautical combination, and the bold lines read clearly even on a small piece. Because it is symmetrical, it is very easy to keep on track.
How to work it
Start at the centre column with the shank, then add the stock and the curved arms, checking one side against the other. Finish with the red ring.
Finishing ideas
At 21 × 18 stitches the design is about 1.5 × 1.3 inches (3.8 × 3.3 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.2 × 1.0 inches on 18-count. Perfect for a sailor’s card, a nautical cushion, a bookmark or a set of coasters; it also looks good on striped fabric.
Colour plan
DMC 336 Navy Blue does the most work, 85% of the 104 stitches, followed by DMC 321 Red at 15%. Every colour is used at least 16 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 72% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 6 times.
