Free latch hook patterns

Bold, simple charts for rugs, cushions and wall hangings, each with the number of yarn pieces you need in every colour.

Latch hook rewards big shapes and strong colours, because the shaggy pile softens fine detail. The designs here use large blocks of colour and only a handful of shades, so they look good up close and from across the room. Each pattern page gives the finished size on standard 3.75-mesh rug canvas and the number of pre-cut pieces per colour, rounded up with a little spare.

One square on the chart is one knot. Work across the canvas a row at a time, starting at the bottom, so the finished pile lies away from the rows you are still hooking. Keep each colour in its own bowl and tick off rows on the printed chart as you go.

The colours are our own named yarn shades rather than one brand of kit yarn, so pick the closest acrylic or wool rug yarn you can buy. If you cut your own pieces, wind the yarn around a piece of card about 3 cm wide and cut along one edge to get even lengths.

These designs are small enough to finish in a few weekends, but you can make any of them larger in the editor by scaling the pattern up or by adding a border of background colour. Every design is original and free to make under CC BY-NC 4.0.

Frequently asked questions

What canvas do these patterns use?

Standard 3.75-mesh rug canvas, with 3.75 holes per inch. The pattern pages give the finished size for that mesh.

How many yarn pieces do I need?

One per knot. The materials list counts every colour and adds about 5% for spares and mistakes.

Can I use the designs as rugs?

Yes. Add a backing fabric and a non-slip layer for floors. Smaller designs also make cushions and wall hangings.

Can I punch needle these designs instead?

Yes. Any of the charts can be followed with a punch needle; check the size against your fabric and loop spacing.
