About this design
The cap of this toadstool is a broad red dome with a darker cranberry rim along its lower edge, which makes it look like it curves under. White spots of different sizes are scattered across the cap, larger near the top and smaller towards the edge, the way they appear on a real fly agaric. The stem is a slightly flared white column with an oatmeal shadow down its right side. Around the base, a strip of moss in two greens has a few darker tufts poking up into the soft sage background. It suits a cottagecore bedroom, a woodland nursery or a cosy reading corner.
How to make it
Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas, which has 3.75 holes per inch, with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 30 × 36 knots the finished piece is about 20 × 24 cm (8 × 9.6 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 1,080 knots in total; the materials list on this page gives the count for each colour, so you can buy pre-cut packs or cut your own pieces around 6.5 cm (2½ in) long. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Trim the spots a little shorter than the red pile if you want them to stand out like a carved rug.
Colour plan
Sage does the most work, 46% of the 1,080 knots, followed by Scarlet at 19%. Every colour is used at least 32 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
Hook it in 36 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 14 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. 36 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side.
