About this design
This rainbow is drawn in six bands of colour: coral, pumpkin, sunflower, lime, sky blue and lavender. The bands are wide and slightly squashed so they curve gently, and their ends disappear into two puffy white clouds, one on each side, built from overlapping rounded shapes. The cream background leaves plenty of space around the arch, and a single row of sand-coloured knots around the edge gives the piece a neat frame. Big blocks of colour make it a forgiving first latch hook project for an older child or a beginner.
How to make it
Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas, which has 3.75 holes per inch, with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 40 × 28 knots the finished piece is about 27 × 19 cm (10.7 × 7.5 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 1,120 knots in total; the materials list on this page gives the count for each colour, so you can buy pre-cut packs or cut your own pieces around 6.5 cm (2½ in) long. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Hang it above a cot or bed with a dowel slipped through a fabric sleeve on the back.
Colour plan
Cream does the most work, 40% of the 1,120 knots, followed by Sand at 12%. Every colour is used at least 46 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
Hook it in 28 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 15 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. 4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side.
