About this design
The strawberry is a rounded heart shape in scarlet, with a band of darker cranberry down the right side for shading and rows of butter-yellow seeds spaced across the surface. A green calyx of pointed leaves spreads over the top of the fruit, and a short dark green stalk rises from the middle. Behind it, a gingham check of blush pink and snow white, three knots per square, gives the piece a picnic-blanket feel. Strawberries are a favourite motif for cushions and bedroom decor, and this one uses just seven colours.
How to make it
Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas, which has 3.75 holes per inch, with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 30 × 30 knots the finished piece is about 20 × 20 cm (8 × 8 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 900 knots in total; the materials list on this page gives the count for each colour, so you can buy pre-cut packs or cut your own pieces around 6.5 cm (2½ in) long. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Sew the finished canvas to a fabric back with a zip so you can remove the cushion pad.
Colour plan
Blush does the most work, 34% of the 900 knots, followed by Snow at 34%. Every colour is used at least 11 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
Hook it in 30 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 15 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. 11 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side.
