About this design

This cloud is a puffy shape of Snow white with a few rounded bumps along the top. It has two small Charcoal eyes, a curved smile and two Blush cheeks. Six short streamers hang below it in Coral, Pumpkin, Sunflower, Lime, Sky and Lavender, a rainbow that looks like it is raining colour. The background is Baby Blue, and the shapes are big and simple, so it is ideal for a child’s first latch hook.

How to make it

Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 36 × 28 knots the finished piece is about 24 × 19 cm (9.6 × 7.5 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 1,008 knots in total; the materials list gives the count for each colour. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Hang it above a cot or turn it into a soft play mat with a fabric backing.

Colour plan

Baby Blue does the most work, 67% of the 1,008 knots, followed by Snow at 24%. Charcoal (10), Blush (10), Pumpkin (10), Lime (10) and Lavender (10) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

Hook it in 28 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 12 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. 2 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side.
