About this design
Wavy checkerboards are everywhere in retro-style homes, and they are surprisingly easy in latch hook because the soft pile hides any tiny irregularities. The squares here start as a regular check nine knots wide, then the lines are bent with a gentle wave in both directions so the squares bulge and pinch across the piece. With only two colours, mustard and cream, the pattern is all about shape. Mustard is warm and forgiving of dust and wear, but you could swap it for sage, rose or terracotta in the editor to suit your room.
How to make it
Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas, which has 3.75 holes per inch, with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 36 × 36 knots the finished piece is about 24 × 24 cm (9.6 × 9.6 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 1,296 knots in total; the materials list on this page gives the count for each colour, so you can buy pre-cut packs or cut your own pieces around 6.5 cm (2½ in) long. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Because every row changes colour several times, keep both colours of yarn within reach in separate bowls.
Colour plan
Mustard does the most work, 53% of the 1,296 knots, followed by Cream at 47%. Every colour is used at least 608 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
Hook it in 36 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 8 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. 4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side.
