About this design
These flowers have the rounded, five-petal shape of 1970s wallpaper and stickers. Two large blooms sit on the diagonal, one hot pink with an orange centre and one orange with a hot pink centre, so the colours swap like a pair. Two smaller lilac flowers with sunflower-yellow centres fill the other corners. The cream background is left plain so the bright colours pop, and because the flowers are big and simple, most rows only change colour two or three times. It is a cheerful beginner project that works as a cushion front, a bath mat or a small bedroom rug.
How to make it
Work on 3.75-mesh rug canvas, which has 3.75 holes per inch, with one knot of pre-cut yarn in each square of the chart. At 32 × 32 knots the finished piece is about 22 × 22 cm (8.5 × 8.5 in), so cut your canvas with at least five extra squares on every side for turning under. The chart needs 1,024 knots in total; the materials list on this page gives the count for each colour, so you can buy pre-cut packs or cut your own pieces around 6.5 cm (2½ in) long. Work across the canvas row by row from the bottom up, so the pile of the finished rows lies away from you. Add a fabric backing with a non-slip layer if you plan to use it on a hard floor.
Colour plan
Cream does the most work, 65% of the 1,024 knots, followed by Hot Pink at 13%. Sunflower (10) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
Hook it in 32 rows from the bottom; the busiest row changes colour 8 times, so cut yarn for a few rows at a time. No square stands alone in its colour.
