Using this chart

Anchor identifies most shades by number alone, so the names here are plain descriptions of the colour (for example “Dark red”), not official names. Search by number, by description or by hex value, or press a family button to see every shade of one colour.

Open a colour for its hex, RGB and CIELAB values, the nearest DMC, Perler and Hama colours with a match rating, its lighter and darker neighbours, which DMC numbers convert to it, contrast for lettering and outlines, and free patterns you can stitch with it. Each colour has its own link for sharing.

Every match is computed with CIEDE2000, the colour-difference formula that tracks how people actually perceive colour, from our documented RGB values (how colour matching works). Use the badge to judge substitutions: very close and close matches are safe swaps; approximate ones deserve a look in daylight.

Converting a whole pattern? The Anchor to DMC conversion table lists every shade side by side, and our pattern makers show the alternative code for every colour in the key automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How many Anchor colours are in this chart?

444 Anchor six-strand cotton shades, each with an approximate colour value, a colour family and its nearest DMC colour.

Why do Anchor colours not have names here?

Anchor publishes most stranded cotton shades by number only. We give each a short descriptive name so the chart is easier to scan, clearly marked as descriptive.

Is there a printable Anchor colour chart?

Yes: Printable chart makes a free PDF of every shade grouped by family, and Stash checklist lists them in number order with tick boxes. Both print on US Letter or A4.

How do I find the Anchor number for a colour I have?

Use the shade finder: pick a colour or paste a hex value to see the eight nearest Anchor shades and how close each one is.

Is Anchor thread the same thickness as DMC?

Both are six-strand mercerised cotton of very similar weight and are generally used interchangeably in counted cross stitch.

Can I mix Anchor and DMC in one project?

Yes. Many stitchers do. Check that substituted colours sit well next to their neighbours, especially in smooth gradients.

How accurate are the colour values?

Anchor does not publish colour values, so ours are sampled from the swatches on Anchor's own shade card and adjusted to the same lightness scale as our DMC data. They are good for finding and comparing shades, but they are the least certain values on this site: check real thread before buying for a whole project. Our methodology page explains how they were made.

How do I open the details for one Anchor colour?

Select any swatch. A panel opens with the colour's values, closest matches, neighbouring shades, contrast and patterns, and the address bar changes to a link for that colour (for example /colors/anchor/#1) that you can bookmark or share.
