About this design
A small, quick strawberry that you can finish in an evening. The berry is a rounded heart shape in Christmas red (321), outlined in garnet (815) and shaded with 498 down the right side and across the bottom, so it looks plump rather than flat. A pink 3705 highlight sits on the upper left, and the seeds are golden 3821 stitches set in a staggered pattern. On top is a green crown of sepals in 702 and 699 with light 704 tips, and a short dark stalk.
How to work it
Start with the garnet outline, which is one continuous line and easy to follow. Fill the red next, leaving the seeds and highlight as gaps, then add the darker shading. Stitch the seeds after the red so the gold stays bright, and do not carry the thread across the back between them, because it will show through. Finish with the leafy crown and stalk. The sepals overlap the top of the berry, so count from the stalk down rather than from the berry up.
Finishing ideas
At 22 × 26 stitches the strawberry is about 1.6 × 1.9 inches on 14-count and just 1.2 × 1.4 inches on 18-count. It fits a 3-inch hoop, a kitchen magnet, a jar lid cover or a tiny felt pin cushion. Stitch a row of three for a summer border on a tea towel.
Colour plan
DMC 321 Red does the most work, 52% of the 366 stitches, followed by DMC 815 Garnet Medium at 11%. DMC 3705 Melon Dark (7) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 36% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
47 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 14 times.
