About this design

This little ornament is a good first needlepoint. The tulip bloom is a simple cup shape with a notched top, worked in two reds: a lighter coral red on the left and a deeper red on the right, which makes the flower look rounded and lit from one side. A straight dark green stem rises from the bottom, with two lighter green leaves angling out from it. The background is deep navy so the red glows, and a frame of old gold, navy and straw-yellow lines runs around the edge, ready to finish as an ornament with a cord or to slip into a small frame.

How to stitch it

Every square of the chart is one tent stitch, and the whole canvas is covered, background included. At 28 × 34 stitches the design measures about 7.1 × 8.6 cm on 10-mesh canvas, 5.5 × 6.6 cm on 13-mesh and 4 × 4.8 cm on 18-mesh, so choose the mesh to suit the size you want and leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of bare canvas all round for finishing. The colour key uses DMC numbers: use stranded or pearl cotton on finer canvas, or match the shades in tapestry wool on 10-mesh, and stitch a small test patch to check the canvas threads are covered. For an ornament, trim the canvas, back it with felt and whip-stitch a twisted cord around the edge.

Colour plan

DMC 823 Navy Blue Dark does the most work, 60% of the 952 stitches, followed by DMC 729 Old Gold Medium at 13%. Every colour is used at least 26 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 14 times.
