About this design
The tree has three stepped tiers of DMC 699 Green, each darker on its right side with 890 Pistachio Green Ultra Dark, and stands on a short 801 Coffee Brown trunk. A gold 725 star crowns the top, and single stitches of red, gold and white are scattered across the branches as baubles. The background is 823 Navy Blue Dark, with a frame of 321 Red and B5200 Snow White around the edge, like a little festive picture.
How to stitch it
Every square of the chart is one tent stitch, and the whole canvas is covered, background included. At 30 × 36 stitches the design measures about 7.6 × 9.1 cm on 10-mesh canvas, 5.9 × 7.0 cm on 13-mesh and 4.2 × 5.1 cm on 18-mesh; leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of bare canvas all round for finishing. The key uses DMC numbers: use stranded or pearl cotton on finer canvas, or match the shades in tapestry wool on 10-mesh, and stitch a small test patch to check the canvas is covered. Finish it as a flat ornament with felt backing and a loop of cord, or stitch several for a mini tree garland.
Colour plan
DMC 823 Navy Blue Dark does the most work, 39% of the 1,080 stitches, followed by DMC 699 Green at 23%. Every colour is used at least 11 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
10 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 11 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
