About this design

Each tulip has a pointed cup of Y21 Rose with a notched top, sitting on a short Y41 Sage stem. Two leaves curve up from the base on either side, so the flowers look like they are growing from a garden bed. The ground is Y02 Cream. One row uses three colours, where the bottom of the flower meets the top of the stem; if you prefer to hold only two colours at a time, knit those stitches in cream and add them afterwards in duplicate stitch.

Knitting the chart

The motif repeats every 12 stitches, and the chart shows 4 repeats across 48 stitches. Every row but one uses two colours or fewer. The longest float is 11 stitches, so catch long floats behind the work every three to five stitches. Duplicate stitch is also an easy fix for any single stitch that ends up in the wrong colour.

Sizing and uses

At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 48-stitch chart is 24 cm wide and the 11 rows are about 3.9 cm tall. Any stitch count that is a multiple of 12 works, so 72 stitches suit a baby’s hat, 84 a child’s, 96 or 108 an adult’s, and a yoke can be any multiple of 12.

Colour plan

Cream does the most work, 75% of the 528 stitches, followed by Sage at 15%. Every colour is used at least 52 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

The longest float is 11 stitches, and 6 rows have a float longer than 5 that should be caught on the wrong side. 1 row uses three or more colours; work those with bobbins (intarsia) or duplicate-stitch the extra colour afterwards.
