About this design
Simple word designs make thoughtful housewarming gifts. The letters H, M and E are blocky capitals two stitches thick, worked in a very dark brown that reads almost black against the ecru background, and a small red heart takes the place of the O. A dotted line of brown and ecru stitches runs inside a solid dark brown edge, like a sampler border. The design is wider than it is tall, so it suits a little sign, a door hanger or the front of a small pillow. Open it in the editor to change the heart colour to match a room.
How to stitch it
Every square of the chart is one tent stitch, and the whole canvas is covered, background included. At 49 × 22 stitches the design measures about 12.4 × 5.6 cm on 10-mesh canvas, 9.6 × 4.3 cm on 13-mesh and 6.9 × 3.1 cm on 18-mesh, so choose the mesh to suit the size you want and leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of bare canvas all round for finishing. The colour key uses DMC numbers: use stranded or pearl cotton on finer canvas, or match the shades in tapestry wool on 10-mesh, and stitch a small test patch to check the canvas threads are covered. Finish it as a sign by lacing the stitched canvas over a piece of card and adding a ribbon hanger.
Colour plan
DMC ECRU does the most work, 59% of the 1,078 stitches, followed by DMC 3371 Black Brown at 32%. Every colour is used at least 27 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
61 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 48 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
