About this design
Eight hearts in DMC 321 Red are arranged on every other square of a diagonal grid, so they form rows running corner to corner. Behind them is a check of Blanc and 818 Baby Pink, four stitches square, which echoes the arrangement of the hearts. It is cheerful, quick to stitch and works for Valentine’s Day, a new baby or simply a pretty pincushion.
How to stitch it
Every square of the chart is one tent stitch, and the whole canvas is covered, background included. At 32 × 32 stitches the design measures about 8.1 × 8.1 cm on 10-mesh canvas, 6.3 × 6.3 cm on 13-mesh and 4.5 × 4.5 cm on 18-mesh; leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of bare canvas all round for finishing. The key uses DMC numbers: use stranded or pearl cotton on finer canvas, or match the shades in tapestry wool on 10-mesh, and stitch a small test patch to check the canvas is covered. Stitch the hearts first, then fill the check around them, counting the squares out from the hearts.
Colour plan
DMC BLANC White does the most work, 34% of the 1,024 stitches, followed by DMC 818 Baby Pink at 34%. Every colour is used at least 320 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 9 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
