About this design

Two round cherries in DMC 321 Red are shaded with 815 Garnet Medium on the lower right edge, and each has a small pale 3713 highlight. Their long stems in 3345 Hunter Green Dark curve up and meet at the top, where a bright 704 Chartreuse leaf sprouts. The background is a small check of Blanc and 3326 Rose Light, two stitches square, which gives it a cheerful retro look.

How to stitch it

Every square of the chart is one tent stitch, and the whole canvas is covered, background included. At 30 × 30 stitches the design measures about 7.6 × 7.6 cm on 10-mesh canvas, 5.9 × 5.9 cm on 13-mesh and 4.2 × 4.2 cm on 18-mesh; leave at least 5 cm (2 in) of bare canvas all round for finishing. The key uses DMC numbers: use stranded or pearl cotton on finer canvas, or match the shades in tapestry wool on 10-mesh, and stitch a small test patch to check the canvas is covered. Make a set of four coasters with different fruits, or back it with felt and cork.

Colour plan

DMC BLANC White does the most work, 40% of the 900 stitches, followed by DMC 3326 Rose Light at 39%. DMC 704 Chartreuse Bright (7) and DMC 3713 Salmon Very Light (4) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

19 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 16 times.
