About this design
The arch is made of six bands: DMC 3705 Melon Dark, 741 Tangerine Medium, 307 Lemon, 703 Chartreuse, 3755 Baby Blue and 210 Lavender Medium, each a narrow band, and the arch is a little flattened so the rainbow is wider than it is tall. Each end disappears into a puffy cloud of B5200 Snow White. It is a small, simple design that suits a new baby, a get-well card or a symbol of hope after a hard time.
How to work it
Work one colour band at a time, starting with the outer melon band and moving inwards; each band follows the curve of the one outside it. Leave the clouds until last. On white Aida, outline the clouds with a backstitch in a pale grey such as 762 so they stand out.
Finishing ideas
At 26 × 16 stitches the design is about 1.9 × 1.1 inches (4.7 × 2.9 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.4 × 0.9 inches on 18-count. It fits a 4-inch hoop, a greetings card or a baby bib, and two rainbows make a sweet border on a cot sheet.
Colour plan
DMC B5200 Snow White does the most work, 25% of the 225 stitches, followed by DMC 3705 Melon Dark at 18%. Every colour is used at least 20 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 46% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
Anchor equivalents
