About this design

The rainbow is a series of thick concentric arches, three pieces wide each, in bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue and medium lavender, rising from the bottom edge and filling most of the plate. The sky behind is sky blue, with light aqua inside the arch near the ground, and two white clouds float in the upper corners. Bold, simple and very colourful, it is a great first mosaic for children.

How to build it

The whole picture fits one 32 × 32 baseplate, about 25.6 cm (10 inches) square, and uses 1,024 1 × 1 pieces. Build the outer red arch first and each band inside it after; the curves follow one another, so they are easy to get right. Sort the pieces by colour into small trays before you start, and use the heavier chart lines every 16 pieces to keep your place on the plate. The finished mosaic can be framed, hung with adhesive strips or simply stood on a shelf.

Colour plan

Sky blue does the most work, 21% of the 1,024 pieces, followed by Bright green at 14%. Every colour is used at least 54 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

On a baseplate, grouping each row's same-coloured studs into 1×N plates (up to 1×8) builds it from about 241 parts instead of 1,024 single studs.
