About this design

The unicorn faces left, with a White head, a single black eye and a Flamingo nostril. The horn is a short diagonal of Rich Butter with Lemon highlights, and the mane falls down the back of the neck in alternating Pink and Lavender. It uses seven colours but most of them only a few beads each, so the sorting is quicker than it looks.

Bead counts: 91 White, 57 Black, 17 Pink, 10 Lavender, 5 Rich Butter, 3 Lemon and 1 Flamingo, 184 beads in all. Buy a few spares of each colour, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

One large square pegboard (29 × 29 pegs) holds the whole 21 × 16 design. The horn steps up diagonally; each bead touches the next along an edge, so place them in order from the head upwards. Check each row against the chart before you move on, as one stray bead is hard to fix after ironing.

Ironing and finishing

An adult should do the ironing. Use ironing paper, a medium dry iron and slow circular movements, lifting the paper to check after about ten seconds. Iron the back once the front has cooled, and leave it under a book so it stays flat. Finished, it is about 10.5 × 8 cm, a good size for a bag charm or a birthday-party favour.

Colour plan

Perler 80-19001 White does the most work, 49% of the 184 beads, followed by Perler 80-19018 Black at 31%. Perler 80-15274 Rich Butter (5), Perler 80-15269 Lemon (3) and Perler 80-15203 Flamingo (1) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 45% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
