About this design
The face is a block of Tan with black eyes, a small nose and a mouth made of a few black beads. Around it, the mane is two rings: Cheddar on the inside and Orange on the outside, with a few beads swapped between the rings so the edge looks shaggy rather than perfectly round. Only four colours are used, so it is a good first animal for younger beaders.
Bead counts: 61 Tan, 58 Orange, 54 Cheddar and 34 Black, 207 beads in all. Buy a few spares of each colour, because the odd bead always rolls away.
Placing the beads
The pattern is 19 × 15, so it sits inside one large square pegboard; centre it so there is a margin all round. Place the black ring around the face first; once it is down, the mane and the face are both simple fills.
Ironing and finishing
Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge. Let it cool, turn it over and press the back, then cool it flat under a heavy book. At about 9.5 × 7.5 cm it makes a magnet or a safari-party favour.
Colour plan
Perler 80-19035 Tan does the most work, 29% of the 207 beads, followed by Perler 80-19004 Orange at 28%. Every colour is used at least 34 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 27% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
