About this design

Real stained glass is held together by strips of lead, and here those lines are drawn with DMC 310 Black, one drill wide. They divide the square into a six-by-six grid of panes, and each pane is split corner to corner into two triangles, giving 72 pieces of colour in all. The glass colours are 3843 Electric Blue, 3765 Peacock Blue Very Dark, 666 Bright Red, 700 Green Bright, 972 Canary Deep and the softer 726 Topaz Light. The arrangement is deliberately irregular, as in a window pieced from leftover glass.

How to work it

With 3,600 drills and seven colours, this is a manageable project for a second or third diamond painting. Start by laying all the black lines, both the straight grid and the diagonals across each pane. They take 1,008 drills, a little over a quarter of the total, and once they are in place each triangle is an enclosed shape you simply fill in, which is very satisfying. Black drills show every gap, so line them up with the side of your tray or a ruler on the long straight runs.

Size and display

The design is 60 drills square, about 15 × 15 cm with 2.5 mm square drills. It looks especially good framed and hung near a window, where the drill facets pick up daylight, or mounted on a box lid. Make a set of four with the colours shuffled and you have a coaster-sized gallery for a shelf.

Colour plan

DMC 310 Black does the most work, 28% of the 3,600 drills, followed by DMC 700 Green Bright at 14%. Every colour is used at least 360 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

252 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; place those drills one at a time. The busiest row changes colour 23 times.
