About this design

Mandalas are a natural fit for diamond painting because the drills catch the light differently on each colour ring, so the finished piece shimmers as you walk past. This one is built around a deep DMC 820 Royal Blue Very Dark ground. Eight petals of 3765 Peacock Blue Very Dark are outlined in 3843 Electric Blue, and they open around a heart of 915 Plum Dark and 550 Violet Very Dark with a small gold centre. A ring of 972 Canary Deep gold and a toothed border of electric blue frame the circle, and the corners outside it are filled with 3865 Winter White.

How to work it

There are 3,721 drills in seven colours. Start in the middle and work outwards, so your hand never rests on finished areas. Place the gold and electric blue outlines first in each section, then fill the petals and the royal-blue ground between them; outlines laid first act as guides and keep the curves smooth. The winter-white corners are large and easy, which makes them good work for a tired evening. Roll back only the section of protective film you are working on, so the glue stays clean.

Size and display

With standard 2.5 mm square drills the image is 61 drills across, about 15.3 cm square, so allow a canvas of roughly 20 cm to leave a margin for framing. That is small enough to finish in a few sessions and fits an off-the-shelf square frame or a deep box frame. Press the finished canvas under a heavy book overnight to seat every drill before you frame it.

Colour plan

DMC 820 Royal Blue Very Dark does the most work, 33% of the 3,721 drills, followed by DMC 3865 Winter White at 27%. Every colour is used at least 84 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 20 times.
