About this design

Working inwards, the coaster has a black outline, a wide Purple rim, a ring of Turquoise and White petals, a Red ring and a centre of Yellow and Orange. The petals turn around the centre rather than mirroring, which gives the design a sense of movement. It uses seven colours, so it is a step up from the other coasters.

Bead counts: 100 Purple, 64 Black, 60 Red, 40 Turquoise, 40 White, 21 Yellow and 16 Orange, 341 beads in all. Buy a few spares of each colour, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

You need one large square pegboard for this 21 × 21 design. Work in rings from the outside in, finishing each ring before starting the next.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge. Let it cool, turn it over and press the back, then cool it flat under a heavy book. At about 10.5 × 10.5 cm it makes a coaster or a wall decoration.

Colour plan

Perler 80-19007 Purple does the most work, 29% of the 341 beads, followed by Perler 80-19018 Black at 19%. Every colour is used at least 16 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 23% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
