About this design

The colours here come straight from a desert evening: baked terracotta, glowing copper and pale straw, with a single cool note of teal-green at the centre to make the warm tones sing. Eight petals in DMC 922 Copper Light and 3854 Autumn Gold Medium are outlined in 3830 Terra Cotta and the dark 3777 Terra Cotta Very Dark. The centre is a round of 501 Blue Green Dark ringed in 3855 Autumn Gold Light, and the same teal reappears as small accent marks scattered around the open ring. The outermost band of 3822 Straw Light is edged in 3777 and cut into scallops.

How to stitch it

Find the middle of your fabric and begin with the dark terracotta circle around the green centre, then outline the petals in 3830 and 3777 before you fill them; outlines first mean the petal shapes are set before the soft fills go in. The teal accents in the open ring are small and separate, so stitch each one with a short length of thread and finish off on the back, rather than carrying green across bare fabric. Work the straw-coloured scalloped band last; every segment is a mirror image of its neighbour, so a miscount shows up straight away when you compare them.

Finishing ideas

At 45 × 45 stitches the piece measures about 3.2 inches on 14-count Aida, ideal for a 4 or 5-inch hoop. It looks striking on oatmeal or natural linen-look fabric, and it would make a good front panel for a small zipped pouch.
