About this design

This fox has settled down for the night: head resting on its tail, eyes closed, ears still up. The shape is a long, low oval, so it sits nicely on a pillow front, a long greetings card or the flap of a pencil case. The coat is a single copper orange (DMC 922) shaded with 920 along the back and belly, while a warm golden stripe of 3853 picks out the curve of the back and the top of the tail. The tail tip and muzzle are Blanc, which gives the design its two bright focal points.

How to work it

Stitch the dark mahogany outline (300) around the head first. It is the busiest part of the chart, with the closed eye and the two ears, and once it is in place the rest of the fox becomes easy to count. Fill the head in 922, add the white muzzle and nose, then work outwards along the body. The tail is a separate band with its own outline, so treat it as a second shape: outline, fill, then the white tip on the left. The ear tips and nose use 3371; the pale inner ears are 945.

Finishing ideas

At 39 × 23 stitches the fox measures about 2.8 × 1.6 inches on 14-count and 2.2 × 1.3 inches on 18-count. On 11-count it grows to 3.5 × 2.1 inches, which fills a 5-inch hoop with a comfortable border. Stitch it on oatmeal or pale grey fabric for a winter cushion patch, or frame it on its own in a small oval frame.

Colour plan

DMC 922 Copper Light does the most work, 56% of the 704 stitches, followed by DMC 300 Mahogany Vy Dk at 21%. Every colour is used at least 10 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 22% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

17 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 16 times.
