About this design

The owl’s face is all about the eyes: two large rings of White with Black pupils and a single Yellow bead in each, set against a Light Brown head with pointed ear tufts. A small Orange beak sits between them, and two Orange feet poke out at the bottom. The chest is Tan dotted with Brown speckles in a staggered pattern, like feathers. The design is symmetrical apart from the speckles, so it is easy to check as you go.

You will need roughly 75 Light Brown, 65 Black, 52 Tan, 36 White, 10 Brown, 9 Orange and 2 Yellow beads. Buy a few spares of each, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

At 17 × 17 beads the design fits easily on one large square pegboard. Place the eye rings first; everything else on the head lines up with them.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge, then let it cool, turn it over and press the back. Cool it flat under a heavy book so it stays straight. At about 8.5 × 8.5 cm in midi beads it makes a woodland-themed magnet, a bookmark charm or a classroom decoration.

Colour plan

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
