About this design
The mast is a straight line of DMC 3371 Black Brown topped with a small 321 Red pennant. A triangular red jib sails in front of it on the left, and a large mainsail on the right is striped in B5200 Snow White and 3753 Antique Blue Ultra Very Light, which suggests the fold lines of the canvas. The hull is 3021 Brown Gray Very Dark with a lighter 3790 deck line, and the sea below is 3325 Baby Blue Light with diagonal flecks of 322 Baby Blue Dark for the waves.
How to work it
Stitch the mast first: it is your guide for both sails. Then add the hull, the sails and the pennant, and finish with the sea. The wave flecks are spaced regularly, so once you see the rhythm you can work them quickly.
Finishing ideas
At 28 × 28 stitches the design is about 2.0 × 2.0 inches (5.1 × 5.1 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.6 × 1.6 inches on 18-count. A nautical nursery, a beach-house cushion, or a birthday card for a sailor; three boats in a row make a lovely border.
Colour plan
DMC 3325 Baby Blue Light does the most work, 32% of the 404 stitches, followed by DMC 321 Red at 14%. Every colour is used at least 17 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 48% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 14 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
