About this design

Light Blue makes the body and Robin’s Egg the belly, so the whale has a soft two-tone look without any shading to place. The whale faces left with a single black eye, and the tail rises and curls up on the right. It is a wide, low design, which makes it handy as a bookmark topper or a fridge magnet with room for a strong magnet strip.

Bead counts: 90 Light Blue, 51 Black and 28 Robin’s Egg, 169 beads in all. Buy a few spares of each colour, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

At 24 × 12 beads the design fits on one large 29 × 29 square pegboard with room to spare. Fill the belly row by row from the bottom; it is a long, even stripe and easy to count.

Ironing and finishing

With an adult at the iron, fuse the front under ironing paper on a medium setting until the holes start to close, then flip it and do the back. Cool it under something heavy to stop it curling. The finished piece is roughly 12 × 6 cm and works well as a magnet or a summer decoration.

Working notes
